Green Hollywood Cares About Celebrities with a Cause

A few days ago, I had the great experience of going down to the HLN / CNN Long Beach studios to tape an interview with Brad Pomerance. He is the host of the CNN spot called Local Edition, with a special report version called Celebrities with a Cause. The morning that I headed into the studios traffic wasn’t too bad, and thankfully, I arrived a good 45 minutes before I was set to tape.

This was such a blessing because the extra time gave me an opportunity to meet Brad right away and sit with him for a bit in his office. I loved how the entire staff on the show were all laid back and easy going. This made getting to know everyone a real pleasure and calmed my nerves quite a bit. Producers and make up artists would casually walk in and out to have their questions answered by Brad with a laugh and a smile. Mr. Pomerance has been hosting this segment for quite a while, so the fact that he had eight back-to-back interviews that day – mine being number two – didn’t phase him at all.

I had seen a few of his snappy, yet educational 5-minute segments when I checked out his program on YouTube. As nice as he seems on camera, he’s even nicer and more generous of spirit in person. I hadn’t taped something on camera in a while, and I was nervous to go on with him. But once we chatted casually about our kids and various other projects that we were working on, we built a lovely rapport which made it that much easier to step onto the set and film the live to broadcast spot.

He is great at his job, and the short interview flew by even though he skillfully hit every important point that we needed to cover. His fast, yet insightful overview of my company background and fact sheet when we were in his office translated to feeling like we’d known each other for years when we were on camera.

He nailed my intro which made brilliant use of my on-topic last name and used it to segue directly into talking about my green jewelry business. He got right to the point by asking me about my recycled 14k gold jewelry and how it’s made. We discussed why using fair trade gemstones and 100% recycled gold have a significant impact on making a conscious and responsible use of precious resources. He generously slipped in that his wife loved 14k gold earrings and that she had even recently graduated from her diamond studies with the GIA. He chose questioning which allowed me to speak about the green charities that I donate 5% of my net profits to: Global Green USA, Charity: Water and Heifer International. And at the beginning of the interview, we even found a way to make mention of my extended background in green building and green Hollywood.

Given his expert skills with putting his guests at ease and keeping the conversation moving, it felt really well-rounded and incredibly informative for a 5-minute interview. I think that my green jewelry brand was well-represented, and along with myself, my 14k gold earrings were gleaming with pride!

Gorgeously Green – Sophie Uliano

As you have seen from my previous posts, I am pretty passionate about taking “green” into the next millennium by finding effortless ways to incorporate these radical new ideas for a better and healthier lifestyle in ways that are actually so simple that it makes you say, “Duh!”. And I am not just passionate about green jewelry and 14K gold earrings! I want to give attention to all aspects of our natural health and beauty as women, so in that vein of thinking, I have to share with you a fantastic discovery that I made the other night when I met a fellow green expert and nationally recognized green lifestyle speaker.

I had the wonderful experience of meeting Sophie Uliano, green lifestyle expert and author of Gorgeously Green, 8 Simple Steps to an Earth-Friendly Life and The Gorgeously Green Diet. From her body of work, it is clear that she’s been at this game for a long time. And after meeting her in person, all I have to say is that she’s the real deal! She is a glowing example of Green Hollywood at its finest. For example, when it comes to the title of her website, book and brand, she truly is absolutely GORGEOUS and indeed very green. She is remarkably well-informed about all-things-green, and she’s also sweet, engaging and great fun to be around!

On this night, she was speaking to a small group of us who had gathered at the Beverly Hills location of Evolue Green Beauty Boutique. Normally, she speaks to thousands of people at a time or she is seen chatting it up with Julia Roberts and Oprah on her Show, but on this night she was engaging and personable as she taught our private group how to make something a natural beauty product that would change our skin care routine forever.

From having unwittingly received a lot of sun damage to my skin as a child, I recently became aware of how vitally important it is to have Vitamin-C in my skin care products is for its healing and anti-aging properties, so I was ALL ears. Ironically, I had just purchased a $150 highly-recommended, Hollywood spa product for this very issue, but I was much more interested in finding an all-natural, low-cost and more effective alternative.

So, here is the incredibly easy recipe that she taught us which can even be viewed on her website at: http://www.gorgeouslygreen.com/

  • Take 1/4 tsp of Vitamin-C powder from a place like Trader Joe’s (costs about $5 and it will last you for over a year)
  • Add 1 tsp of distiller water and mix together for one minute
  • Add 1 tsp of vegetable glycerin oil ($8 from “Now” brand at Whole Foods or online and that will last you over a year too)

And THAT IS IT, you’re done!

You simply mix this three-step formula once each week and pour it in a small glass dropper. This magic potion costs no more than .15 cents per bottle per week, and a year’s supply will cost only about $7.80 For that price and the effectiveness of the product, I’m thinking about making up a larger bottle and using it all over my body! Sophie recommends using the serum on your face, neck, shoulders, arms, hands and chest. Given the fact that she did not have a single wrinkle on her face and she looked as fresh and plump as a 16 year, I am sold!

Fair Trade Citrine Stone 14K Gold Leverback Earrings

One of my favorite leverback drop earrings from my 14K gold earring collection are the fair trade citrine stone leverback drops. Part of the reason is because, I LOVE yellow! I decorate with it often in my homes, and I also think that yellow is a sunny and joyful color to have in one’s wardrobe. This pair of earrings has found its way into my heart, because there is something extra special about gemstones. They have a cut, energy and radiance all their own, which is softer than diamond or CZ. Their sparkle is unique and warm. Diamonds and CZs, although simply gorgeous as any woman would attest to, have a sharper type of sparkle. The cut of a diamond is very angular and the shapes that you see when you look straight into the stone are a bit harsh and pointed.

Gemstones, on the other hand, are cut very differently. Their physical properties don’t allow for them to be cut into such angular shapes, so what you receive instead is a shape that is often rounder and more fluid. They still have facets, of course, but there are just enough to let their inner light shine through. A feeling of fluidity and gentility is the essence of the energy that it holds. They feel relaxing and gentle to look at and to wear. The personal statement that wearing a gemstone makes speaks more to sweetness and a one-of-a-kind coloring. They offer an almost inward-flowing type of energy and choosing a pair of 14K gold gemstone leverback drop earrings feels like a gift to yourself. It feeds your energy field, and it expresses your unique personality by offering its unique form and hue.

The leverback citrine color fits my personality very well. I like that the color is sweet and subtle. The yellow citrine looks amazing against the yellow gold backdrop of the earring’s leverback basket. This style, set against my blond hair, makes me feel as bright and warm as the sun. My favorite outfit to wear them with is my yellow sun dress which has yellow flowers sewn delicately onto the bust. The delicate golden earrings with their radiant natural stones finish it off perfectly. Not too much sass and not too little … like Goldilocks said, they’re Juuuuust Right!

Solstice Celebration 14K Gold Chandelier Earrings

What would it be like to own one spectacular pair of 14K gold earrings that could work with your easy breezy dresses as well as finish off a simple jeans and t-shirt look? Well, if you don’t know much about my green jewelry line of exquisitely handcrafted gold earrings, please allow me to introduce you.

My greatest intention with custom designing a line of 100% solid gold earrings was to create something that had both universal appeal, yet was intensely personal to its fashionable owner at the same time. A task this big might seem almost impossible, but I have to say, I genuinely think that I accomplished my goal.

My designs in stud earrings, leverback drop earrings, hoop earrings, kids earrings and chandelier earrings all have a certain simplicity which is very appealing to most women and very complementary to all of their flairs for style. But what makes them intensely personal is the extreme attention to detail that I have infused them with which gives them a one-of-a kind, customized feel and a luxurious, intricate design.

If you were to try on every piece in the collection, you would discover, like I have, that they enhance natural beauty by not overpowering the uniqueness of the woman wearing them. Their delicate shapes and rich golden shine make your eyes sparkle every time, with every pair. Take the example of the pair that I am wearing in these pictures. This is the Solstice Celebration 14K Gold Chandelier Earring. It has a sister earring which is called the Grand Solstice Celebration Chandelier, but those are perfect for truly grand events, or when you are looking for a lot of attention.

The Single Solstice Celebration earrings have so much character, so much design appeal, so many delicate curves and beautiful nuances yet their size works perfectly for a well-put-together, yet casual outfit. They will draw attention to you in all the right ways, and they will effortlessly complete your look with a truly rich finish. I will continue showing you more examples of how all of these earrings can be worn, and if you visit my main website to purchase them, I’d love your photos of ways that you made them work with half of your wardrobe too!

Cherry Tree Triple Mandala Chandelier Earrings

If you are looking to make a huge statement in the most elegant way with one piece of jewelry, you’ve got to give the Cherry Tree Triple Mandala chandelier earrings a shot! They will become some of the most cherished items of 14K gold jewelry that you will ever own. You can see from the picture how I’m wearing these is with my hair blown straight, parted in the middle and pulled back loosely over my ears. I’ve found that this is the way to wear these earrings best in order to showcase how classically they dangle from the ear and how intricately designed that they really are.

If you look closely at the design, you will see why they are called the “Cherry Tree Triple Mandala” 14K gold earrings. First, they have an elegant motif that cascades down a total of three times. Second, Their round shape and symmetrical, repeating design is exactly that of a mandala-like art piece. And third, If you look even closer, you will see tiny little cherry stems hanging from the inside of each of openings within the mandala design. Handcrafted gold jewelry like this is actually quite hard to find. Most pieces that have this much gold in them often read as clunky and chunky and don’t look anywhere near this effortless, yet precious.

Although I can recommend almost all of my 14K gold earrings as good matches for any outfit, I will concede that these sustainable earrings go best with a very class and well-structured ensembles. They might look a little overblown if you pair them with a loose fitting t-shirt, but if you wear them with your best pair of skinny jeans and a crisp button-up shirt or a sleek black dress and a great gold-toned clutch, you are guaranteed to be noticed by EVERYONE in the room! Just remember to loosely tie your hair back away from your face and have it hang gently over your ears as the perfect frame for the Cherry Tree Mandalas to dangle down from … and I promise that you will feel like a million bucks!

360 Degree Design Thinking Makes All the Difference in Crafting Luxuriously Eco-Friendly Fashion Accessories

I am very passionate about design in every conceivable form. From art to fashion to architecture and even taking it as far as how food is arranged on a plate, I think that design is what drives culture and the human spirit forward. Choosing to live in a way in which we select only beautiful images to gaze upon and elegantly-crafted lifestyle products to care for ourselves with completely improves the quality of one’s life. High-caliber design raises our spirit, improves our mood, and encourages us to be the very best that we can be.

When I was first conceiving of how I wanted to move from architectural and interior design to fashion and jewelry design – then specifically earring design – I did so because I knew that earrings, more than any other item of jewelry, were universally appealing for women, and in today’s economy, they also provide the most cost-effective and impressive impact on one’s personal style. The next step in my entrepreneurial endeavor was to define what my personal aesthetic and design story was going to be. I love clean lines and creative concepts that aren’t overtly complicated, yet I still love craftsmanship that pays extreme attention to detail, quality, symmetry and proportion. I have experienced that when designs are well-balanced, simple and high-quality they inherently give their owners a sense of calm and confidence.

Over the course of my career, I traveled the world studying art, fashion and architecture, and I discovered that the most highly sought after and most impressive designs and styles embodied a certain warmth that can only come from the human touch. In keeping with this artistic truth, I encourage designers to incorporate one-of-a-kind qualities into their sustainably-manufactured golden baubles, so that every piece is touched with love by caring hands. By taking this kind of personal attention with luxury earrings, one can ensure that the integrity and durability of these pieces is the absolute highest. And despite at first inspection, my style of earrings may appear to be very simple, at second glance you will discover that there is far more to their story and creation.

First off, let me describe the “baskets” which hold the precious stones. Since gorgeous gemstones are the focal point of any pair of studs or leverback drops, it should be a main priority to design the gemstone baskets to be delicate. This way, the stone’s light and beauty can truly shine through. The design benefit of having such a delicate golden basket also has three deeper design and sustainability layers. Number one, offering such a refined, delicate design enhances a woman’s delicate features and captures her essence of femininity. Next, in regards to a mission of sustainability, unique lightweight styles reduce the actual quantity of precious metal that you need to manufacture the jewelry with by half and in some cases by two-thirds. This design choice conserves resources. Additionally, making a sustainable decision to exclusively use only RECYCLED gold translates to the fact that a company does not participate in any new gold mining projects in this and other countries. Finally, since this wonderful precious metal is indeed very costly, lighter-weight designs can give customers an amazingly high-quality and sustainable product for the lowest price tag on the market.

Next, if you’re talking about earrings, you have to talk about the sparkle! It is so important to work with the finest quality cubic zirconia and fair trade gemstones that you can find. Fair trade gemstones are sourced from product suppliers who commit to protecting the people and the land from where they are mined. As the smartest alternative to diamonds, the brilliance that comes through top notch CZ stones is almost exactly the same as the quality of sparkle that you will find in diamonds, but they will cost you several thousand dollars less. By choosing these fair trade stones in your green jewelry designs, you will not only have the peace of mind of knowing that you did not destroy a mountain, poison an ecosystem or displace a community in the effort of placing that sparkle on your ear, but you will also be able to send your kids to college from the money that you’ve saved.

The purpose for putting all of this thought into making great jewelry is to simply create gorgeous accessories that help women to feel beautiful and effortless everyday. With most women’s jewelry drawers spilling over with necklaces, earrings, rings and bracelets in every kind of material and color of the rainbow, creating timeless and versatile pieces for women who will want to wear them over and over again is one of the greenest things that any designer can do. “Less is More” is the perfect mantra to have in mind as a green designer of any kind. The ultimate test is finding that the same pair of earrings can work as gorgeously with an elegant evening gown as it does for jeans and a t-shirt. If one pair of earrings is as easy and effortless as they are refined and glamorous, and a woman can feel pretty wearing them everyday of their life, that is special and that is great design!

4th Annual Eco Emmys Gifting Suite – Green Hollywood at its Best!

Today, I attended the 4th Annual Eco Emmys Gifting Suite, produced by Debbie Durkin. It was held at a private luxury residence way up in the Hollywood Hills. Often, when I attend events that speak to being “green”, I discover that the organizer’s intentions are in the right place, but that the actual quality of the event is far more “intention” and not based in substance.

Having been a green builder, green lifestyle coach and green jewelry designer for several decades, I see how much of a challenge it is to get everyone in the whole world on the same page and aware of the same green priorities. So, instead of being disappointed by making slow progress, I usually just try to feel glad that people are making any kind of an effort in this direction at all.

Given this reality, today’s Green Hollywood event was a VERY welcome surprise for me! This is because today’s event was far more GREEN than I even expected it to be. Every participating sponsor was a genuinely green company. And I know this is true, because I really put them through their paces! In fact, it wasn’t even a matter of putting them through their paces, as much as it was having the pleasure of chatting at great length about their products and passions. All of them were deeply committed to the environment, vegan foods, personal health, organic fabrics, recycled packaging, green building, natural ingredients, 14K recycled gold earrings, chemical-free skin care, raw desserts and so on and so forth.

At one point along the green brick road, I ran into Stephen Root. He was really nice, and he was at the eco event with his wife. When I had a minute to speak with him, I told him how much I have loved his acting roles over the years – like Jimmy James on “News Radio” and Milton in “Office Space”. My support caught him off guard I suppose, because when I ended my exuberant description of how much I appreciated his work, he asked if I would want to be his agent … I thought that that was pretty funny. After a quick laugh, I headed off to get my nails done, green style of course … no polish, just a great shiny, natural buff.

The unusual venue that the great event was held at was a huge eco-friendly mansion in the Hollywood Hills. Several of the designers of the green house were present and I had a chance to speak with them. They all expressed to me how proud they were of how the house turned out. First, all of the house’s electricity is powered from solar energy and the array of panels is integrated ingeniously on the roof deck level of the home (see the photo). Next, all of the home’s gutter systems funnel to perforated irrigation piping and water all of the home’s landscaping. Next, all lighting and electronics are LED – even the huge flat screen TVs which use no more that 100 watts per hour – about as much than a standard light bulb! Additionally, the materials used to build the house are highly energy-efficient and non-toxic. And finally, all of the window glazing and skylights are designed to automatically open and close and naturally ventilate the home so that virtually no air conditioning is required. But, the list really just keeps going on and on after that.

Interestingly enough, one of the green sponsors stationed just inside the front door was a green home vacation management company called Signature Vacation Homes. They are in charge of renting out this very home, so if you’re interested in staying here the next time you’re in town, you too can have it for only $60,000 a month! If that seems a bit pricey, don’t worry, that includes white glove service and organic chocolates on your pillow, too!

Children’s Earrings Fit for A Princess

My children are amazing and my daughter is a little angel. I adore this child more than words can say. I’m so proud to call her my own, and I’m proud to have raised her as a independent and compassionate little person.

So, when it came time to ask her whether she was ready to take the modern right of passage and get her ears pierced, I was excited to see what she would say. I’ve raised my kids in such a way that I try to give them as much self-reliance as is appropriate for each of their ages that they go through. So, when it’s time to give them full reign over making certain decisions for themselves, I trust their decisions whole-heartedly and support them completely.

When my daughter, Lavender, turned 8 years old, it seemed like a good time to offer her the decision of whether she wanted to pierce her ears. Her best friend, Aurora, had actually just pierced her ears so the timing was perfect, and of course, Lavender wanted to be just like her Aurora. Taking this step toward becoming a big girl seemed like a great time for her to take further ownership of her little body and decide how she look as a maturing young lady.

The day of getting her ears pierced turned out to be a bit more of an adventure than we were expecting, though. The area that we live in didn’t seem to have any typical ear piercing kiosks or stores nearby. But after driving around for a while and finally just googling the issue until we found a solution, we ended up at the Beverly Center in West Hollywood where they did, indeed, have a Claire’s.

She was such a trooper. I know that millions of kids do this everyday, and it’s really not THAT big of a deal, but I love using these unique moments to watch how my kids will react to pressure and teach them skills for how to cope with it in a positive fashion – pun intended. Knowing how to handle oneself in small, yet challenging situations can often translate into building tools for how to handle the bigger and more challenging circumstances that inevitably come up later in their lives.

When we got there, Lavender was pretty uncertain of what to expect. After signing off on all of the paperwork and watching the attendants place the dots on her ears, the moment of having the pair of Claire’s ear piercing girls standing over her, with their ear piercing guns pointed at her head, was kind of intense for all of us. But I could see Lavender talking herself down inside her head, remaining focused and trying to take deep breaths to stay relaxed just before they pulled their triggers.

Then, CLICK, all of a sudden it was over … and her ears were pierced! But of course, that’s right when the red hot stinging sensation hit her. She sucked in her little cheeks until her face looked like a tiny blond-haired fish. I knew that this was her way of dealing with the stinging discomfort that hit her at that second. I reminded her to keep breathing and I showered her with praise for being so brave. I was so proud of how she handled it, and she definitely looked so very cute with the brand new earrings! I wasn’t expecting for the children’s earrings that she chose to look nearly as good as they did on her, but it made me that much more excited to share with her all of the other recycled gold earring styles in my own kids earring line.

About a month ago, I was lucky enough to spend a few minutes with my photographer friend Elijah Star. As a favor, he took some shots of Lavender now that she’s made it through the healing process after the ear piercing. Lavender chose to wear the Blue Belly Spiders from the Rebekah Green Jewelry collection that day. Since all of my children’s earrings are made of one hundred percent 14K gold, not only can I offer my daughter the highest quality pure gold earrings, but I can rest assured knowing that the earrings are also nickel-free and hypoallergenic for her delicate little ears.

Taking this step of maturity together as a family was such a great experience for both of us, and although piercing a child’s ears is a completely personal experience for every family, Lavender and I both got more out of it than we were expecting. We wish you the best with your green fashion right of passage as well!

Green Hollywood Strikes Again!

Okay, so I have to admit that the photo of me here isn’t the greatest shot that I’ve ever taken, but it’s worth telling the story behind how it came to be, so I’ll just have to suck up my vanity for the sake of shining the light on charity.

I was exercising at one of my favorite places yesterday, the Santa Monica steps. I was getting a quick work out in before the sun set on another beautiful Wednesday evening. I hit the scene all fired up and I made my way down the steps for the first of my many repetitions. On my way down, I noticed a strapping young man making his way up the steps as I passed beside him. I thought that I recognized him immediately, thanks to his trademark dreadlocks, even though they were held in place by his stylin’ purple headband.

The man, indeed, turned out to be Sal Masekela. He is the host of the Daily 10, an entertainment news show on the E! Entertainment network. As if that wasn’t enough to hold down, Sal is also the official host of the X-Games on ESPN and is an ESPN correspondent who covered the World Cup games in South Africa this summer. Sal’s father is actually from South Africa, so while Sal was there for the World Cup, ESPN hired him and his father to produce a ten-part series called “Umlando”. The series documents the events of South Africa becoming a democratic nation and the story is told “through his father’s eyes” – which is what “Umlando” means in Zulu.

Other than these gigs, Sal’s schedule is additionally packed with countless live hosting appearances and acting roles. As a hometown boy and longtime California surfer, he was a perfect fit for his voice-over role as the SPEN sport commentator in the full length animated feature “Surf’s Up”. Just the day before, he was in Utah shooting a scene for another movie and was on the Daily 10 talking about the ungodly hot temperatures on set.

How he made it back to LA and found time to fit in a workout at the steps … I have no idea.

Either way, I took a chance and reached out to speak with him when he made his way down to the bottom of the steps. He was so lovely and within a short period of time, he was telling me that it was his first visit to the famous Santa Monica steps and that he was, in fact, training for the NYC marathon in November. He explained that he was running it in support of his charity called STOKED (http://www.stoked.org). I thought that it was awesome and very serendipitous that he shared that with me, especially given the fact that my own life’s mission is to help people and the planet in similar ways.

I came to learn that STOKED is a youth mentoring program based in LA and NY. It pairs kids who are at risk of going down a hard path in life with sports-oriented mentors who they can connect with and be guided by. Having been in social work and green coaching, myself, I have a personal understanding of how much good this kind of green charity work can do. Stoked.org has built their mentoring program around action sports. This is beneficial in so many ways for kids, including getting healthy and physically active, building supportive relationships with peers, offering concrete skills and confidence in new-found abilities and interacting with positive role models who can give the kids a vision of a brighter future.

I wonder if Sal will be running the NYC marathon alongside some of the kids from his program? I’ll have to ask him the next time we chat.

Until I met Sal, personally, I would have never guessed that his back story and commitment to making the world a better place was so vibrant and deeply-rooted. Clearly, his entertaining one-liners and witty quips that he delivers on the Daily 10 are just the cherry on top of a his mulit-layered and complexly-flavored organic cake. Bravo to Sal! It’s awesome to meet yet another warrior in the land of Green Hollywood!

If you live in Los Angeles or New York, please check out his charity’s website to see how you can help (http://www.stoked.org) … and then write about your experience in my Eco-Hero contest!

Hoop Earrings – Unexpectedly Refined and Classic

I hadn’t worn my 14K Gold Hoop Earrings with Rebekah’s Flower in a while, until the other day. They must have fallen to the back of my jewelry box while I was obsessed with my cubic zirconia leverback drop earrings for a few months (since those really do go with everything). But when I tried them on again, I fell in love again.

Usually, I feel that hoops are best suited for when a person feel particularly young and sassy on a given day and their outfit is toned down and simple. They are especially great with jeans and a t-shirt. But when I unearthed my gold hoops again, I decided to try them on with a rather sophisticated outfit. I wasn’t expecting them to work with the outfit at all, but with my hair pulled back, they actually looked amazing. I carry all different sizes of hoops in my Rebekah Green Jewelry collection, including simple 14K recycled gold hoops with no embellishment, but my favorites truly are the Hoops with Rebekah’s Flower on them. Both the large and medium sizes work extremely well with different outfits, but the hoops with Rebekah’s flower upgrades a look from casual and toned down to special and elegant.

Since I generally don’t try on hoops when I’m getting really dressing up, I hadn’t discovered that the hoop earrings with Rebekah’s flower were a great compliment to a classier and more refined ensemble. I found myself wearing them for many days in a row, because I couldn’t get enough of them and how fresh and sexy it felt to wear them with my finer clothes. Take a look at how well they go with both of the outfits in the pictures. I really wouldn’t have guessed that they would enhance them so nicely, but I think that the key is the flower. That embellishment takes them to an entirely new level.

If you already know that you love hoop earrings, definitely give this pair a shot. And if you’ve never seen yourself wearing hoops like this, I promise you that you’ll be shocked by how young and fun and yet, classic and elegant they make you feel!
